Section 12: Evaluation

AS Media Studios Coursework Evaluation

Q1.In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge the forms and conventions of real media products?

When we were in the initial planning stage of out thriller we wanted to use as many Thriller codes and conventions as possible but we also wanted to break away from some of the stereotypical clichés associated with thriller films. We kept our opening sequence simple and therefore realistic for the audience and we also added a little suspense but not in the typical thriller style (a chase scene) we did this by using the enigma codes who? Where? And why? Using this question method to keep the audience in suspense follows the teachings of Noel Carroll who says that a thriller should keep the audience guessing and this in turn makes it more excitable for the audience. Our thriller opening is the similar to other thrillers, such as ‘The Godfather’ but only by the fact that it involves the audience and makes the audience think early one, they do this because they want the audience to be kept interested and intrigued.

Again like our film ‘The Godfather’ does not go into immediate action like many other films such as ‘The Terminator 2’ does; where you are immediately thrown into chaos and destruction, some directors choose to do this because it automatically intrigues the audience by all the drama and in ‘The Terminator 2’ case it introduces something “exotic” by showing the machines first, doing this makes the audience ask questions like ‘who are they?’ or ‘what are they?’ The audience will ask these questions because the machines are not something you see in real life and because of that they also shock people. As I was saying, ‘The Godfather’ does not have immediate action but at the very beginning it does use partial vision, and shows just the actor who is speaking, even the background is black. Doing this is another way of creating tension without all the action scenes. In our opening sequence we wanted to create tension and drama but without big action scenes and so we decided to keep the audience guessing and wanting them to ask questions like “Who is she?” “Where is she?” and “What or who is she looking for?”

This picture illustrates that we used the enigma, where? We purposely didn’t show the audience any signposts of the places name because we wanted it to be a mystery. This adds suspense as the audience doesn’t know where the character is. It also shows that we have used another popular code and convention of a thriller film; it shows that we have set our opening sequence in an urban landscape which according to G.K Chesterton is essential in a thriller film because it can create the most destruction.

This picture illustrates that we used the enigma, who? Again we purposely didn’t give the audience any indication as to who the person in the picture could be. We did this because we wanted to keep the audience in the dark about who the woman was and why our protagonist had a picture of her.

One of the biggest codes and conventions of thriller films is cold and dark weather, this is because it can add to the dark nature of thriller films. However the weather in thriller films can also portray the characters emotions and give connotations to their attitude. For example in our opening sequence the weather is cold which could connote that our protagonist (Heidi) is a cold person at the beginning. However we purposely didn’t make it a dark day because we didn’t want to connote that she was a dark person.

Q2. How does your product represent different social groups?

The key social groups within our thriller are: age, gender, morals and status. These social groups are key to portraying a modern themed film because there are many ideologies based on these social groups throughout the ages, so accuracy is very important if we want our film to connect with the audience.

Our thriller’s target audience is age 18-25 and we figured this out from the audience research results. Even though our audience would probably lean towards young adult we did want to make it appeal to other ages, obviously not for people under the age of 18 because that is the certificate it was given but to older generations. And to do this we had to have characters of different ages for these people to connect with.

As a production team (Warped Productions) we decided to break away from the stereotypical male thriller lead and chose to have a woman as our protagonist. We also chose to make our protagonist as realistic and ordinary as we could; we didn’t want to make her more powerful or strong than other characters or gave her a high status mainly because we wanted to portray her vulnerability to the audience and also because we wanted her to connect with teenage girls by making her ‘one of them.’

We also made her a stereotypical female character by means of her costume, as you can see from the picture at the side, Heidi is wearing a pink coat, scarf and willies, which is a very feminine colour and also brings us back to the fact that we made her look innocent or child-like.

The main aim of our thriller was to portray gangs in a negative way and how they bring destruction to communities and essentially ruin people’s lives and to do this we had to add some characters who would help portray this negative energy to the audience and this is where ‘Spike’ is introduced, he is the leader of the gang and not a very nice person, he is around 40 and because of this we show him as a very naive and selfish person who only care about himself and he thinks he is a cut above the rest. He also has very violent tendencies and throughout our film you will see him beat his wife and other women which suggest that he has a very low opinion of women.

We wanted to represent morals in our thriller because it was a good way to differentiate between good and bad by the morals that they had. For example Heidi never wanted to hurt people as it’s not in her nature, she is a generally loving and caring person, however ‘Spike’ is made to contrast Heidi a lot by always looking for violence and blood, he just likes to hurt people and so he’s a horrible person, we decided to have composing morals for these characters so the audience could have a change in characters and it also makes Heidi come through as the better person even with all the bad stuff she does in the film.

Q2.What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why?

Due to our film being British and our actors being British, we as a production company feel like its import for it to be distributed by a British company.

As a company we have been drawn towards Film 4, we have chosen to go with company because it is a very popular British company and is well respected within the movie industry. We also think that with Film 4 label on our thriller it will promote our film in the most positive way because the British public know that Film 4 only do good quality films.

We happen to think that Film 4 would be extremely interested in our product for a number of reasons; firstly, it is a pure British film outlining trouble with gangs in Britain. Secondly, it has fresh, new British actors and actresses, which Film 4 have stated that they are always looking for. And finally our film will be popular target audience which Film 4 is trying to connect with. All in all I think we stand a good chance at getting distributed by them.

Film 4’s official website is: http://www.film4.com/

Q4.Who would be the target audience for your media product?

Through our extensive audience research we were able to come to the conclusion that our film would attract a target audience of the ages 18-25, I think our film came up with this age group because it is very serious yet appealing to young adults because of the issues the characters face such as sex, drugs, prostitution, gangs, crime and violence and all of these are very appealing to the young adult.

As our protagonist is a young, pretty female, we feel like this will attract the attention of the male audience and also the female because she will be a teenage girl with problems like every other teenage girl in the country, we also feel that making the protagonist between the ages of 18-25 will help the audience connect with her and so her problems will be their problems and this will make the audience part of the film, the picture to the left are the girls who would be attracted to the film because of being able to relate to the female lead.

Men would be attracted to the film because of the story line because of the gang, gun and trafficking plot lines and not to mention the violent scenes within our film. The picture to the left is the type of male audience that this film would attract because of the story line but I think the character would also attract him because all the female one are really pretty.

Q5.How did you attract and address your audience?

Our company relied greatly on audience research; we created a question which we distributed throughout different age ranges and we asked question to try and figure out what people love about thrillers.

From our results we found out that a physiological thriller was the most popular and from this we made sure that our thriller included a physiological plot line of sorts. Because of our initial plot line, we found it a little difficult to introduce this genre of thriller but we did, we made some of the characters have domestic problems and we also added some mysteries that kept the audience guessing.

Because we had a female protagonist we needed to make sure that our female wasn’t female dominated because this would have deterred the male audience. We did this by introducing quite a lot of graphic violence into our thriller to attract the male audience and it also includes a lot of action such as fight scenes and death.

We also wanted to attract a wider audience so we made sure that we use a lot of thriller codes and conventions which attract the audience to a thriller film. We felt that in turn this attracted people to watch our film.

Q6.What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

During this project I have learnt many new technical things such as how to use the video camera correctly and this includes setting it up, making sure the battery is charged, making sure you have a fresh tape and it is at the beginning, so your footage is easy to find. I have also learnt how to use a new program which is called Adobe Premier Pro to edit our film and during this we had to add diagetic sound to our opening sequence because our on the footage was ruined. To do this we first had to unlink the sound and video on our footage and then delete the bits we wanted, we then imported the sound of traffic on top of the video itself.

But before we even did any of that we had to create a folder to keep all of our files in for our production work. This is where we stored our captured our footage in order to play back and make the best opening sequence.

1. We opened Adobe Premier Pro and selected “New Project”

2. When then chose “standard 48hz”

3. We then had to find an existing folder to save our work to and we went to “My Computer” and chose our teachers folder.

4. Once we had started on our work, in a new session we could open Adobe Premier Pro and get back to our previous work we would have to click 'Open Project' under the 'File' task bar and then loaded up our project which was saved in my computer.

5. We then had to capture our footage we did this by pressing F5 and then we had to press I at the start of the scene we wanted and then O for when the scene ended.

Q7.Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product? [written response due to audio complications]

For our preliminary task we were put into groups assigned to by our teacher and I found this a point because I wasn’t distracted by friends, however there was quite a lot of arguments among our group but we had to learn to get on to produce the best possible work. Once doing this we were able to focus on the task in hand and work better as a group, I found this useful when we were working on our main task because we were able to put all arguments to the side to get the best possible results in our thriller.

I think that the preliminary allowed us to experiment with camera movements as well, like how the camera can add suspense or make someone look like they have the a high status or low status depending on the position of the camera, it was generally a good chance to experiment for our main task and when we came to that we were able to use the best angles to create tension and suspence.

Section 8: Storyboard

Section 7: Recce and Location Health and Safety

Recce

We have chose Warrington Central Station as our priority/first choice filming location because of it's industrial setting and element of transport which is relevant to our synopsis. Warrington Central is easily accessible but is also a popular train station at peak rush hour times, so we must consider the public when deciding on our filming times. It is a popular train station which has a pay phone and vital amenities as if our group encounter an emergency we will have a source of contact, there are also toilets on the Bank Quay site.

Location Address :-Winwick Street, Warrington, Cheshire, WA2 7TT
The Health and Safety Aspects of Production

Before filming as a group, we must consider the Health and Safety Aspects of production in order to be certain of our own safety as well as correctly and safely using the equipment. This is essential with in a working environment and we must remain professional and considerate as we will be filming in a public area.

Applying health and safety:

Emergency Procedures

It is vital that the filming crew and cast are aware of the nearest fire exits and emergency procedures, therefore it is essential that we keep fire exits clear if we film indoors. It is also necessary to be aware of the nearest first aid kit available and each crew member must carry a phone in order to be able to contact an emergency number if necessary.

Costume

As the weather conditions are extremely poor at the moment, it is important to consider the costume which the cast will be wearing as well as considering our own welfare by wrapping up. As we will be filming mid-day and the protagonist will be wearing a warm coat, we should hopefully not be concerned with costume malfunctions.

Weather Conditions and Lighting (Time of Day)

Because of the poor weather conditions it is essential to check our location out for any ice which may not only harm us but also damage equipment. We must be able to work with the weather and it is vital that we don’t leave it until too late in the afternoon as the lighting will be poor, if filming late or early it is important to make other team members and family aware of this in case of an emergency. Torches and extra lighting may be necessary in a dark condition.

Location

As we are filming offsite it is important that there are three crew members on site whilst filming, this is for protection as if one is to get hurt, one can go for help whilst the other stays with and helps, it also prevents any mugging and is extra protection. It is extremely vital that each crew member has one another’s contact details in a case of an emergency and that family are aware of the location and access to it. It is also important to consider any additional danger, as our film will be set outside a train station the biggest risk may be security guards so it is important that we are prepared in explaining our legal rights to the security guard.

Equipment Safety

As we are using college equipment and could be liable for any damage, it is important to maintain the welfare of the equipment in order to use it again. It is important to ensures that all tripod clips are fastened and level in a safe place, this is in order to avoid any trips by crew members or public and also to avoid the equipment falling over, by taping down cables this ensures a safer working environment. If our group decide that lighting will be necessary we must be extremely careful when working with the lights as they can be up to 1,000 watts, therefore we must wear gloves to avoid burns and don’t touch the framing and outside of the light too as that is also extremely heated. It is vital to check that the lights have wire mesh or protection around the lighting to protect ourselves from a bulb exploding and firing hot pieces of glass! We must also choose whether to use the redhead lighting or the blonde lighting.
